Walgreens is by far one of my favorite shops- close, convenient and offering a little bit of everything. Though Walgreens may primarily be a drug store, they have so much more than just pharmaceuticals.
Like many of the smaller stores, Walgreens is usually open on Thanksgiving, providing customers a welcome respite from all the turkey and family-togetherness of the holiday. They have exclusive deals just on Thanksgiving that can be a huge savings for consumers! Last year, Red Box was giving out a few movie rental to the first 250 people that came to the store, and they opened at 9am, so it’s easy to quick stop by before the Thanksgiving festivities begin! In addition, all of their toys were 50% off! They also had a BOGO sale on most of those “As Seen on TV” items.
Walgreens is not only a great place to shop during Black Friday for Christmas gifts and goodies, but it’s also a place to stock up on essentials for the year. Whether it’s bandaids, medicine, greeting cards, wrapping paper, pens and pencils, toiletries, Walgreens has it all, and everything is at an all-time low for the year.
And, don’t forget your Walgreens Balance Rewards card- holiday shopping offers plenty of opportunities to rack up on some major bonus points for future discounts.
Walgreens is the largest drug retailing chain in the United States with a mind-boggling 8,217 stores in all 50 states! The first Walgreens was opened in Chicago, Illinois in 1901 by Charles Walgreen. One interesting fact about the growth of Walgreens was how prohibition played a role in its expansion. In the 1920’s, the consumption of alcohol was illegal unless you had a prescription for whiskey due to health reasons. You can imagine the amount of business Walgreens received for selling prescription whiskey.
Dick’s Sporting Goods is one of the largest sporting goods stores in the United States. You’ll find lots of great Black Friday sales on winter wear, shoes, workout equipment, treadmills, golf gear, hunting gear, basketball, soccer, baseball, football… you name it, they have it.
During Black Friday’s past, Dick’s Sporting Goods has followed the trend to begin sales on Thursday night, rather than Friday morning. For Dick’s, this includes a variety of doorbusters available to the first through the store and only for a limited time. Doorbuster deals end at the sporting goods retailer on Friday afternoon. However, a great sale continues through the weekend and even into Monday.
Last year’s Black Friday advertisement from Dick’s encompassed a whopping 16 pages of everything an outdoor enthusiast could possibly desire. Deer stands, shotguns, crossbows, boots, and insulated camouflage clothing were just a few of the highly discounted items available to lucky shoppers. Popular “The North Face” brand hoodies were available during Black Friday 2013 at Dicks in a variety of sizes and colors for men and women, at only $55 a pop.
One exclusive sale from last year included a buy one; get one free deal on Skeet Reese Spinning or Baitcast Combo rod and reels. Kayaks from Trophy Angler, Fusion, and PathFinder were available for nearly half off regular retail price. Boots, fleece clothing, tents, air mattresses, sleeping bags, gun safes, and virtually anything else a hunter or fisher would want came at record-breaking prices to Dick’s shoppers during Black Friday 2013.
Black Friday 2014 at Dick’s Sporting Good is expected to be just as incredible. The best deals come early, but great deals remain throughout the weekend and throughout Cyber Monday. Online specials, like free shipping are also available, expanding the offers to even those locations where a brick-and-mortar Dick’s store may not be within driving distance.
Dick’s and subsidiaries fill a special place in the Christmas wish list. This is the place for those who enjoy hunting or fishing, live for camping, or even a leisurely evening on the green. From golfing equipment and tackle boxes, to high-tech camping gear, Dick’s has a little bit of everything outdoors and sports related at prices that cannot be beat.
In 1948, an 18-year-old in Binghamton, New York, armed with a $300 investment from his grandmother, followed his dream of owning and operating an outdoorsman store. The 18-year-old was Richard “Dick” Stack, founder of Dick’s Sporting Goods.
What started as a small bait and tackle shop soon expanded, to one location and then another. From meager beginnings, the company grew and expanded. Eventually the store included locations all over upstate New York. Richard “Dick” Stack remained president of the company until 1984 when his son, Edward “Eddie” Stack, succeeded him.
It was under Eddie Stack’s control that the company became a worldwide success. Though most locations are still on the east coast, the company now boasts over 500 stores and multi-billion dollar revenue. Subsidiaries include Chicks, Field and Stream, Golf Galaxy Inc., True Runner, Blue Sombrero, and the company’s booming ecommerce site, DicksSportingGoods.com
Black Friday sales begin on Thanksgiving Night around 8 PM. at most US-based Staples stores. The store then closes at midnight and re-opens bright and early, around 6 AM on Black Friday. Though there aren’t necessarily “doorbusters” at Staples, many of the best deals will go quickly. So, if something at Staples tops your list be prepared to get there and in line early. Do not let the non-traditional store premise fool you, Stales is a hot commodity on Black Friday.
Staples offers computers, office supplies, industrial cleaning supplies, furniture, and office decor. During Black Friday these typically rather pricey supplies drop significantly in price. It is one of the two best sales of the year at Staples, the first being when school starts back in August. It is a great time to stock up the office or replenish dwindling school supplies.
Traditionally the store offers a lot of buy one, get one free deals on Black Friday. Some of the deals from last year included HP photo paper packs. Another trademark move of Staples on Black Friday is the “free after rebate” deals. These can quickly save hundreds of dollars for those who are organized enough to keep up with receipts and follow rebate directions. Some of the free after rebate deals Staples offered in 2014 included reams of paper and R.S.V.P. pens. The store also provided coupons in their Black Friday circular, another way for consumers to add a little extra savings onto already spectacular prices.
Furniture, cleaning supplies, Keurig coffee makers, ink, toner, pens, computers, cameras, tablets, printers and mobile phones were all represented during previous Staples Black Friday sales. This year is stacking up to look much the same. Though the best deals are found in-store, Staples also offered a number of online Black Friday deals and follow up Cyber Monday deals.
Friendly customer service, fabulous sales, and quality products have helped grow Staples, a once novel idea, into a huge chain found all over the world. A great place to get office supplies, school supplies, and even some craft supplies, Staples is the perfect place to find gifts for coworkers, teachers, and many others.
Staples, a popular American-based office-supply chain, first opened its doors in Framingham, Massachusetts in May of 1986. A revolutionary idea at the time, founder Thomas Stemberg discovered a need for a large retail office supply outlet after running out of printer ink on one fateful fourth of July when all small, local retailers were closed.
The rest, as they say, is history. Today Staples has rival competitors in the form of OfficeMax and Office Depot. At one point there were plans to merge Office Depot and Staples, but the merger was denied by the Federal Trade Commission in the early 1990’s, sparking a bitter rivalry. At this time, Staples Inc. operates 1,575 stores in the United States, 2,281 stores worldwide, and 121 warehouses and fulfillment centers. The company is ranked 127 on the Fortune 500 and employees over 90,000 staff members.
J.C. Penney, like most department stores, has consistently opened earlier and earlier for Black Friday over the last few years. In 2013, the stores begin opening at 8 PM on Thanksgiving eve. The traditional niche sales tactic of offering free, small Disney snowglobes as a doorbuster to the each store’s first customers also returned in 2013, after a brief hiatus. Starting at 4 AM on Black Friday, the gifts were distributed as customers walked through the door.
In addition to adorable, collectible snow globes, consumers were privy to a number of fantastic deals including diamond jewelry for $79, a selection including dozens of styles of women’s boot for $29 and $39, and a variety of kitchen electronic appliances for only $9.99. Appliances and kitchen supplies are the top deals traditionally offered by J.C. Penney. Linens, pillows, comforters, mattresses, and similar products are a huge boon for the sale each year. In addition to providing a variety of higher end lines, the company runs its own line of discount appliances known as “Cooks” and linen line known as “J.C. Penney Home”.
J.C. Penney offers coupons throughout the year in catalogues, frequently distributed through local papers. The store offers all the typical department store fare, including jewelry, clothing, home goods, and shoes. Formerly an independent unit, high-end, Sephora makeup is found inside of most modern J.C. Penney stores. Quarterly clearance sales marked by petal pink stickers and black inked prices, keep the store of great interest to consumers.
J.C. Penney has managed to remain a top mall-based department store for decades. Unlike Sears or Walmart, J.C. Penney has stuck to moderately high-end fashion and accessories, with a mix of home goods. In fact, home goods make up the bulk of what consumers come to J.C. Penney for on Black Friday. The stores do not offer large appliances or electronics. In fact, with the exception of a few logo tweaks, J.C. Penney has remained largely unchanged over the years.
Headquartered in Plano, Texas, the J.C. Penney department store originally came to fruition in 1902. It was then that James Cash Penney and William Henry McManus opened the first J.C. Penney in Kemmerer, Wyoming. During the 20th century, J.C. Penney operated at times out of centers in New York City and Salt Lake City.
There are over 1,100 J.C. Penney department stores in the United States. At its peak the company included more than 1,600 stores. Most are currently located in shopping malls. Prior to the 1960’s, these stores were typically found in downtown shopping districts. At present the store is worth over $12 billion in revenue. Although this included a few years of academic decline, it seems to be on the upswing as of 2014.
Today J.C. Penney commonly rents out sections of the store to outside retailers. This includes partnerships with salons, Seattle’s Best Coffee, and Sephora. A relatively novel idea for semi-high end department stores, this adds value to the store and keeps consumers interested.
Sears will have deals on appliances, consumer electronics, TVs, cameras, tools, clothing, jewelry, etc. This year their stores open at 4am and will remain one of the most popular Black Friday 2014 destinations because of their wide variety or products. Sears actually opens their doors on 8pm Thursday.
Sears offers a reasonably priced department store option, often found in local malls. With thousands of shops worldwide, prices are at their most rock-bottom fantastic during the store’s annual Black Friday sale following Thanksgiving each fall.
The store publishes an advertisement featuring hundreds of special deals. Doorbusters, available in short-supply to the first shoppers in the door, often include highly desirable items at a fraction of their regular retail cost.
Unique deals on tools, lawn equipment, and jewelry set Sears apart from similar department stores during the holiday season. The stores is known for their high-quality Craftsman tool selection, often available at a great discount during the holidays and featuring an incredible warranty. This makes the shop a great stop for anyone seeking tools and equipment for dad or other crafty friends and family.
Sears stores are often part of larger mall or outlets, offering customers a buffet of Black Friday shopping to devour without ever having to return to the car. Shops like JC Penney, Dillards, and Macys are often within indoor walking distance. Like many modern stores, Sears also offers a “Shop Your Way” rewards subscription program for customers. This program offers a bevy of additional bonus deals for shoppers during Black Friday and all year long. This includes a wide selection of online and printed coupons designed only for members. Consumers who subscribe to Sears’s Discover credit cards also receive a number of special discount deals throughout the year.
Although traditional Sears’s stores do not carry a wide selection of toys in their brick and mortar shops, during the holidays a special selection of top-selling toys is brought in for customers to peruse. This gives Sears’s consumers just one more thing to enjoy while visiting the shopping mecca.
Sears is a multi-billion dollar retail company headquartered in Hoffman Estates, Illinois. The company was originally founded in Chicago, Illinois in 1893 by Richard Warren Sears and Alvah Curtis Roebuck as a mail-order catalogue. At the time this was a very popular way of retail sales. Since that time it has grown to include more than 2,000 stores.
Until being surpassed by Walmart in the late 1980’s, Sears was the long-term, number one department store in the United States. Today Sears is the fourth leading department store in retail sales and 12-th largest retailer in the United States.
Sears shoppers are treated to a variety of items including home goods, appliances, clothing, electronics, jewelry, and tools. Sears stores are currently part of a much larger fleet of retailers under the parent company of Sears Holdings. Kmart, Sears Essentials, Sears Outlet, Land’s End, and Sears Grands are included in this list of successful retail outlets. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sears
In keeping with the stores reputation of being one of the most employee and customer friendly retailers, the store traditionally stays closed on Thanksgiving. This does not mean the store opens at midnight either. The Black Friday deals at Costco actually roll out around 9 AM, just an hour earlier than any other Friday of the year. This gives shoppers plenty of time to grab all the limited time doorbusters before heading to Costco for reliable, low-priced specials that rival the competition.
When the doors do open to Costco, members are privy to the best prices of the year, on high quality, name brand products. Some deals from 2013 included $25 off Vitamix blenders, a top-notch product that rarely goes on sale. Additionally, Samsung Galaxy tablets, TVs, and Blu Ray players were marked down an average of $100 or more. Other popular deals included everything from computers, dryers, socks, and cozy fleece blankets. Keep in mind that these deals were on top of Costco’s already famously low prices.
Although they may not have the accompanying fan fair of other retailers, Black Friday deals are absolutely something to check out. Thanks to the lack of frenzied early morning openings, this is a great final stop for members on the big Friday shopping extravaganza that millions of Americans participate in every year. For those who are not yet members of the big-box warehouse store, this is a great time to invest in a membership.
In addition to a great sale in store, Costco also puts on a fantastic Black Friday sale online. This is perfect for shoppers who are not quite ready to brave the crowds and the cold that accompany Black Friday. Additionally, Costco’s amazing deals typically last all weekend long. There is plenty to go around and a great return policy helps to keep buyer’s remorse to a minimum.
Despite not giving into the trend to open on Thanksgiving, offer door busters, or crack the doors open at daybreak, Costco still does quite well on Black Friday and year-round. The store is currently one of the most successful retailers in the world. It is one of few popular retailers that steadily turns a profit, making Black Friday, named because it is the first time many stores turn a profit all year (going from “the red” into “the black”), mostly a novelty for the retail giant.
Costco stores offer a big-box membership club for consumers all over the United States and beyond. This multinational retailer is the 2nd largest retailer in the US and 7th largest retailer in the world. It is the biggest membership only store in the United States, with biggest competition coming from Sam’s Club.
The first Costco opened in Seattle, Washington in 1983. Seattle is still the worldwide headquarters of Costco. The company holds the distinction of being the very first retailer to go from zero to $3 billion dollars in sales in under 6 years. As of 2014, Costco was number 19 on the fortune 500.
Sam’s Club is a membership club that offers good discounts all year round on electronics, clothing, books, jewelry, food, beverages, and more! Shop online on Thanksgiving Day. The in-store sales start on Black Friday.
Black Friday at Sam’s Club is a great time to stock up on essentials, as well as a few desirables. Examples of hot deals from the 2013 Black Friday sale at Sam’s Club include a single cup Keurig system for $99, Samsung Galaxy phones for .96, 8-piece stem less wine glass sets for $9.98, and a 50 inch VIZIO Smart TV for less than $500.
Sam’s Club is by no means the traditional Black Friday stop. The massive sibling of Walmart is a for-pay, big-box, membership club, but to attract new members the store offered a deal on Black Friday 2013, wherein applicants obtain a $40 gift card for joining. Generally, the club offers a bevy of coupons and discounts to go along with this as well. A great way to keep the discounts going all year long, not to mention Sam’s amazing deals on food, house goods, cleaning supplies, jewelry, electronic, books, and more. Most products come in bulk, making it a popular choice for large families and small businesses alike.
Luggage, Godiva hot cocoa gift sets, and luxurious Oscar de la Renta plush robes were some of the goodies offered at discount during previous year’s sales. Although deals offered during the Black Friday sale include discounts and rewards for membership, it is typically a better use of time to sign up ahead of Black Friday. Thankfully, the deals on this membership last all year long. Sam’s Club offers a delightful combination of high-end luxury items and discount big box treats all year round.
Sam’s Club traditionally rolls out the deals a little later than other retailers do, with big sales not actually kicking off until Friday morning. However, this can be a part of a well thought out Black Friday game plans. Stop by Sam’s Club as a final stop and enjoy a cornucopia of snacks from the stores massive bakery or in-store diner. Snack away on popcorn, a soda, or a fresh hotdog while grabbing those last few items on the list or picking up a ready-made pizza for dinner before you crash from that long night of spending.
Sam’s Club is a membership warehouse club. Owned by parent company Walmart and based in Bentonville, Arkansas, Sam’s Club, first opened in 1983. The name comes from Walmart founder Sam Walton. Sam’s Club is an international company with 25 locations outside of the United States and over 632 locations within the United States. Serving over 47 million members, Sam’s Club ranks second in sales among warehouse clubs, coming up behind Costco. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sam%27s_Club

Kmart is a super popular destination for Black Friday shoppers, right behind Walmart and Target. They will have competitive Black Friday sales on TVs, blu-ray players, movies, music, books, clothes, toys, etc.
Starting in 2013, Kmart executives decided to get ahead of the competition when it comes to Black Friday. Instead of starting in the wee hours of Friday morning or even the late hours of Thanksgiving, Kmart opened their doors and sales at 6 AM. The store remained opened until late Friday night. In other words, Kmart offered 41 hours of non-stop deals.
The deals offered by Kmart tend to be very similar to those put on by direct competitors like Walmart and Target. Members of Kmart’s Shop Your Way rewards program get extra special deals during the holiday sale, as do those who utilized a Kmart charge card when making purchases.
Deals from 2013 include a 22 inch LED screen TV for only $129.99 and a 46 LED RCA TV for $399.99. A 4-Piece luggage set sold for $49.99 and 20 inch mountain bikes, both male and female, sold for $69.99 each. Doorbusters, which took place on Thursday morning and Friday morning, included BOGO board game sets and small kitchen appliances for only $4.99 each. Wildly popular Fisher Price Little People playsets also sold buy one; get one free during Black Friday 2013. This was a huge draw for the parents of toddlers.
This year’s deals are expected to be just as fabulous if not better. Kmart is often plays second fiddle to Walmart when it comes to revenue. However, on Black Friday the playing field is far more even. Starting the sale hours earlier than competitors and remaining open for nearly two straight days also increases Kmart’s ability to make record-breaking sales during Black Friday.
Like Walmart, Kmart offers tiered sales with multiple, timed doorbuster opportunities. However, the wider expanse of hours offered by Kmart makes these deals even greater in volume and attainability. Stop by Kmart nearly any point on Thursday and Friday for incredible, one-of-a-kind deals on a wide variety of gifts, home products, electronics, children’s toys, clothing, and so much more.
Kmart discount department stores are a favorite among American consumers. Headquartered in Hoffman Estates, Illinois since the purchase of Sears, Kmart was originally founded in Detroit, Michigan in 1899. In the early days, the corporation’s department stores were known as S.S. Kresge Stores. It was not until after Walmart’s development in the early 60s that the stores became known as Kmart. At the same time a number of supermarkets known as Kmart Food also opened. The grocery stores did not last, but the Kmart department store took off with a bolt.
In the eighties, Kmart became a huge part of pop culture by offering “blue light specials”, wherein a Kmart employee would spontaneously offer deals in specific areas of the store. Customers could find the deals via the flashing blue police light on the operating cashier’s cart. Though the days of blue light specials have passed, Kmart remains one of a billion dollar industry with over 1,200 stores.
Target is in the top 3 brick and mortar retailers for Black Friday. Their specialty is toys, electronics, home entertainment, and home goods. Target has grown in popularity the last few years as they’ve become more competitive with their pricing and often have deals that directly compete with Walmart and Best Buy. We’re expecting great Black Friday sales from Target this year.
Target Offers Top Deals for Loyal Black Friday Shoppers
Every Black Friday Target shoppers all over North America wrap around the company’s thousands of storefronts in the dark, cold night to get first bat at some of the year’s best deals on top-selling items. Seasonal Black Friday favorites from Target include blu-ray and DVDs at rock bottom prices, top toys, and electronic deals at rock bottom prices. Target competes heavily with other retailers during this season, often beating top prices at places like Walmart, Kmart, and Sears.
In recent years, Target has followed the department store industry’s growing trend to open Black Friday sales earlier and earlier. In 2013, doors opened at a record-breaking 8 PM on Thanksgiving Day and sales went all weekend long, with the best deals happening in the wee hours of Friday morning.
One popular deal from 2013’s ad included a high-resolution digital camera from Nikon for half of the regular retail price. Several Apple Products were on sale at last year’s Target Black Friday sale, including the Apple iPad, iPad Mini, and Beats by Dre headphones at record-low prices. Apple is expected to be another forerunner this year, with the release of iPhone 6 coming just a few months shy of Black Friday 2014.
Television sets are always a huge draw for Black Friday crowds. Shoppers can expect this year to be no different, with Target likely offering a wide assortment of ever-evolving television sets at prices near or below wholesale for those lucky enough to make it in time for the ever-coveted doorbuster sale. Smart TVs like this Razor LED from Vizio are expected to be top-sellers this holiday season. As a growing number of Americans unplug from traditional cable and satellite providers, streaming devices such as Apple TV and Roku will also find their way on the cover of many Black Friday ads and the top of many a letter to Santa.
As always, for the best deals, expect to arrive early and ready to shop. However, hot deals and incredible sales tend to last throughout the holiday season as Target continues to their successful fight for the coveted spot of number one department store in the US.
The Target Corporation, headquartered in Minneapolis, Minnesota is the second biggest retailer in the United States, right behind Walmart. The Target Corporation originated in 1902, when George Draper Dayton opened his fist retail store “Goodfellow Dry Goods”. This simple store eventually grew into Target, a one of the country’s first discount department stores, opened in 1962. By the late 1970’s Target grew into a billion dollar industry, making it to the most successful of Dayton’s enterprises.
Today Target is a multi-billion dollar business with stores in the United States and Canada. The company is number 36 on the Fortune 500. In the mid -1990’s many stores expanded to include groceries and home goods, in the form of Super Target. This development, along with exclusive partnerships with top-shelf designers has made Target a top-choice for many Americans. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Target_Corporation
