It also is understood that this is the place to shop for the home improvement enthusiast, mechanic, or carpenter in your life.

About Lowe's Home Improvement
The first Lowe's store opened in North Wilkesboro, North Carolina in 1921. Named for founder Lucius Smith Lowe, it was known as "Lowe's North Wilkesboro Hardware". In 1940, Lucius Lowe passed away, bequeathing his hardware store to his daughter. Ruth, his daughter, sold her hand in the company to her brother.
From there, Lowe's first began to expand. Early attempts included grocery stores, notions, horse tack, and snuff. There were even Lowe's Groceries. Well into the 1980's and through several executive shifts, Lowe's remained a small town hardware store. However, as competition grew from Big Box retailers the store eventually had to shift focus or face destruction. Today most of the 1,700 + Lowe's stores around the world are big-box format, with only a few holdouts in smaller markets.
Today Lowe's is the second largest retail hardware chain in the United States and world, still lagging behind Home Depot in both cases. The retailer is ranked #43 on the Fortune 500 index.
